"two-for-one" guy cards by lauren bergold

if you like girlie goodness--soft colors, floral patterns, pretty embellishments--you're probably already as big a fan of pixie dust paperie as i am. and i can assure you that august's PICNIC BASKET kit will not disappoint! but we papercrafters sometimes need to make projects and cards for the men in our lives, as well.

can this kit multi-task? why don't you tell me:

this card uses bits of FIVE of the ten patterned papers featured in the kit. two of the papers i've used here have significant floral components, can you guess which ones? i bet not--but i'm happy to tell you: the bright yellow paper with the notebook-punched edge is pink paislee's "trellis" paper, it's got a very delicate all-over flower design in grey. can you see it here? nope, it just reads bright and cheery! the blue plaid strip is from a girls' paperie page called "gingham stripe" in which it alternates with pretty garden bouquets, but by trimming selectively, here it's all boy!

i was so excited by how easily this came together that i had to have ANOTHER go:

this time i paired the reverse sides of two other feminine patterns: cosmo cricket's "remnant" and "trinkets" papers. i used the chipboard backing sheet from webster's buttons and twine as a mask to make my own "circle paper" with spray mists and a pattern stamp, and mounted my greeting on top.

i should also mention that every my layers of punched strips on both cards are actually off-cuts from other projects. many of them almost seemed too small to save, but you can see that when stacked and combined they pack a pretty considerable design "punch"! :)

of course, the webster's pages buttons & twine, the cosmo cricket cardstock stickers and the october afternoon "seaside" letters were already gender neutral; when you add them all together you've got a guy-friendly card or layout...or *TWO*... just waiting to happen! :)

banner birthday card by lauren bergold

i've said it before, and no doubt i will say it again, but in the meantime here it is now:

GUY CARDS ARE HARDER TO MAKE THAN GIRL CARDS!!!

partially it's my own STYLE--i mean, heck, my favorite color is hot pink and i've never met a frilly embellishment i didn't love! ;) but also, i just think it's more difficult to make something luscious, textural, and FAB in a masculine style.

...UNLESS... you have the june pixie dust kit, SUMMER OF LOVE, in which case it's a SNAP, see?

first of all there are the amazing sassafras flag banner stickers: you get an entire 12x12 sheet of 'em! then there's pink paislee's "soiree" paper, which adds instant birthday goodness. in this case to my paper-pieced cupcake, the base of which is made from american crafts paper that has a festive "happy birthday" greeting on the tear strip! white lace & buttons might seem feminine... until you realize they will make the perfect whipped cream and cherry for a birthday confection! i misted and sewed my own stenciled star background here, but there are some fun patterns in the kit that'd work equally well.

so what do you think? i say, "mission accomplished!" :)

make a wish card by lauren bergold

one of the best things about the gorgeous and super-generous kits pixie-in-chief kirsty vittetoe assembles for us every month is their versatility! take this month's offering, LA DOLCE VITA for example: yes, it's loaded with pretty frills, fancy flowers and sheer fabulousness... but can you still use it to make a "guy card"??

yes, you most certainly can! see?!

isn't it amazing what a difference *context* makes? because when you first see the 12x12" sheet of sassafras "sweetly smitten" stickers that comes in the kit, your impression is of soft feminine colors, and vintage goodness... which of course it HAS, in spades! but if you look at the individual stickers, there are plenty of plainer ones that, when combined, can look quite manly!

especially if you maybe dirty them up a little bit with some distress inks, or even stamp a sort of worn or grungy pattern on them? i've done that on three of the stickers, as well as on the very cool pink paislee "ambrose" letters. then all i needed was a fun banner cut from scraps of glitz, american crafts and websters' papers, which i secured with some of the smaller brads from the entire pack of sassafras ones that came in the kit, and i was ALL SET!

and now i am ready to celebrate the birthday of one of my favorite gentlemen! ♥

happy birthday tag card by lauren bergold

i don't often base a masculine birthday card around *floral* paper...but the muted colors and distressed edges of this lovely sheet from glitz designs found in the COUNTRY FARM STAND kit make it much more flexible than one might think!

i distressed it a bit more and used it to cover a couple of the shipping tags from the kit, before adding a decorative edge of white pink paislee paper, a few graphic 45 cardstock stickers and white seam binding. finally i made a sentiment from dymo labels and the corrugated alphabet from last month's kit, FLORIBUNDA.

et voila: a new and rather elegant "guy card" for my collection! :)

"wish you were here" card by lauren bergold

i have to confess i was so taken with the *PIXIE* aspect of the SPRINGTIME PIXIE kit, that i mostly focused on making projects that featured pixies. so when it came to the sheet of october afternoon's "campfire" paper, i tended to use the polka-dotted reverse side, as an accent. but the adorable woodland campground map is so very appealing, isn't it?

i just HAD TO reserve a bit of it, and try my hand at making a card! i wasn't sure what i'd do, until i noticed one section of the paper had a little dotted line leading to a spot marked with an "X"; and i knew i wanted to enlarge on that. i wound up using embroidery thread to really ACCENT the line... and here's what i came up with:
my favorite things here (besides the embroidered line!) are the "photo corners", which i made by stamping two of the small chipboard frames in the kit with a woodgrain-patterned stamp, cutting them neatly into quarters, and stacking the bits on top of each other . i love this technique because it essentially means that ANY size frame can be made to work on any size image!

i did have to cheat very slightly in terms of the chipboard letters on the card: the small ones are maya road mini's and were actually leftover from the october kit, FALL in LOVE! the others i just happened to have in my personal stash, but they are the larger version of the same "noah" font...so i think that's an acceptable exception, don't you??! :)

Kirsty's Note -
Simply brilliant Lauren, great used of that campfire paper that neglected by most of us, and those corners made from the Maya Road chipboard frame in the Kit, another super great idea!

Guy Card by Lori Hairston

Okay, guy cards can be kind of hard.  But, I seem to make a lot of them.  I do all the birthday cards at work and there are a lot of guys.  And I have several women who routinely special order cards for their husbands and sons.  I needed to make a birthday card and was looking through the fabulous December kit, when inspiration struck!
I aged one of the Tattered Angels cards and built the rest of the card around it.
The paper on the left side is actually a Christmas paper, but worked great here!  Hey, I just realized the paper on the right is the backside of a Christmas paper.  Very versatile!
There's a card of buttons that comes in this kit and the large brown one was perfect for this card.  This card is for a friend's son...think he'll like it?

Kirsty's Note -
Fabulous masculine card Lori! I too love how versatile these papers are, it can be use on a christmas project and when the season is over, you can use it on anything else, how cool is that!
All papers and yummy embellishments are from Pixie Dust Paperie December Kit, grab yours now at The Pixie Shop!
